The LGBTQIA+ Resource Center still exists and offers the same services and is still located in Smithgall 140. However, it has undergone and will continue to undergo changes as a part of the anti-DEI legislation being enacted across the country.
On 2/26/2025 we announced the following:
In accordance with recent executive orders, the Dear Colleagues letter, and Georgia SB120, Georgia Tech has decided to preemptively dissolve the LGBTQIA+ Resource Center (LRC), Women’s Resource Center, and Black Culture, Innovation, and Technology and move them all under the Arts, Belonging, and Community Department.
It is important to emphasize first that these actions are not a direct result of these orders; they are a calculated attempt at risk management. By redistributing these centers’ services to another department, GT is attempting to avoid closer scrutiny. At the same time, these resources will become severely limited in their scope and autonomy.
After over 10 years of service, on Friday, February 28th the LRC’s website, Instagram, and other social platforms will go dark. They will not be able to send out any official communication under the LRC name going forward. The physical center will remain, for now, but at this time it is unclear what it will look like. Scheduled programming remains– things like Q-chats will still happen each week– and other programming will continue to be announced through us and other student orgs.
GT is intentionally vague in their directions, but as more information becomes available we will be sure to share. However, it’s unlikely they will stop at assimilating services into another department and we are looking at a future where the LRC no longer operates as we have known it to. We will not sit by while they take away essential services and community spaces.
Pride Alliance’s (PA) website will be updated soon to catalog many of the resources previously shown on the LRC. PA is also prepared to take on distributing and maintaining the programming the LRC will continue to have and fill in the gaps left by anti DEI legislation.
If you want to be involved, there is a town hall meeting on Thursday at noon in the Ferst Center. Show up and show them we care and are watching. If you are a part of another org impacted by anti-DEI legislation, reach out to us directly. We are organizing and planning what to do. If you do nothing else– stay informed.
They can’t touch community; we are our best resource right now.
On 2/28/2025, Vice President of Student Engagement and Wellbeing Loulou Hong sent out this newsletter detailing the changes that would take place. The LGBTQIA+ Resource Center, Women’s Resource Center, and Black Culture, Innovation, and Technology centers were thus combined under the name “Belonging and Student Support.” All signage inside of Smithgall was changed at 5pm the same afternoon.
The old LRC website is down but can be found at this link in web archives. It contains a much more extensive list of resources in and around ATL than our website does.
